Hypothyroidism and Radioiodine Therapy
نویسنده
چکیده
In hyperthyroidism three major treatment modalities are currently available: antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and surgery, each of which presents advantages and restrictions (Surk et al.,1990). RAIT is considered as the most comfortable and economical approach of hyperthyroidism treatment caused by Graves ́ disease or toxic nodular goiter. Such treatment is indicated in patients with/or without functional autonomy to normalize thyroid function, and to reduce thyroid volume (Meier et al., 2002).

Qualitative and quantitative impact of protective glucocorticoid therapy on the effective 131I half-life in radioiodine therapy for Graves disease.
UNLABELLED This aim of this retrospective study was to determine the impact of glucocorticoid therapy on the effective (131)I half-life in radioiodine therapy for Graves disease. METHODS Three hundred fifteen consecutive Graves disease patients undergoing radioiodine therapy at our institution between August 2004 and January 2009 were enrolled. We investigated the influences of thyroid state ...

BACKGROUND: The current status of radioiodine-131 (RaI) dosimetry for Graves' hyperthyroidism is not clear. Recurrent hyperthyroidism and iatrogenic hypothyroidism are two problems which interact such that trying to solve one leads to exacerbation of the other. Optimized RaI therapy has therefore begun to be defined just in terms of early hypothyroidism (ablative therapy) as physicians have giv...
متن کاملEvaluation of Radioiodine Therapy in the Refractory Hyperthyroidism
Background: Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical state with potentially multiple etiologies, clinical presentations, and treatments. Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical condition that results from inappropriate function of thyroid hormone in the body tissues. During the early 1950s, radioactive iodine was used as a definitive treatment method. During the last two decades, radioactive iodine has been recognize...

Introduction: Radioiodine (131I) is an effective and inexpensive alternative to surgery in the treatment of thyroid hyperfunction. The debate today concerns the maximum and minimum ablative doses, and factors leading to hypothyroidism. Patients & Method: 1035 hyperthyroid patients treated with weight-adjusted ablative doses of 131I were retrospectively assessed for ...
متن کاملEfficacy of Different Protocols of Radioiodine Therapy for Treatment of Toxic Nodular Goiter: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Literature
CONTEXT To evaluate treatment success and hypothyroidism following main methods of radioiodine therapy of toxic nodular goiter (TNG); calculated versus fixed dose and high versus low dose of radioiodine. EVIDENCE ACQUISITIONS We searched MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases from inception till July 2013, for clinical trials that compared two different methods of radioiodine administration in TNG. The...
